About Les Délices
Founded in Cleveland in 2006 by baroque oboist Debra Nagy, Les Délices brings together artists with national reputations who share a passion for this exquisite yet seldom heard repertoire. Les Délices is committed to presenting premiere performances of important works and to adapting neglected masterpieces to their own performing forces: research, improvisation, and composition in historical styles are touchstones of the group’s approach. The resulting performances are new, beautiful, and authentic in their own right. |

On February 16 & 17, Les Délices (pronounced Lay day-LEASE) inspires and excites love’s wide-ranging emotions with “Portrait of Love.” Presented in collaboration with the Cleveland Classical Guitar Society, this Valentine’s Day concert features internationally-acclaimed lutenist Nigel North and up-and-coming soprano Carrie Henneman Shaw performing love songs from seventeenth-century France. Les Délices performs inside the galleries of Tregoning & Company (1300 W. 78th St, Cleveland) on Saturday, February 16, 2013 at 8:00pm, and in Herr Chapel at Plymouth Church (2860 Coventry Rd., Shaker Heights) on Sunday, February 17, 2013 at 4:00pm.
Les Délices is a small ensemble that makes a big impact with entertaining, thought-provoking programs presented in unique and intimate settings that enhance the listening experience. Les Délices’ informal gallery concerts celebrate Cleveland’s flourishing arts community and simulate a salon atmosphere similar to the one in which this music was first heard and enjoyed. The Saturday evening concert will be followed by a wine and cheese reception and conversation with the artists. |
Renowned for his solo recordings of Bach and Dowland, Nigel North has brought lute playing in the modern era to a new standard. North’s concerts with Les Délices present a rare opportunity to hear him work his magic as a collaborator, coaxing lyricism and emotion from within the ensemble. Soprano Carrie Henneman Shaw, hailed as a “major musical force” (St. Paul Pioneer Press), makes her debut performance with Les Délices in these concerts.North and Shaw are joined by Emily Walhout (viola da gamba) and Les Délices’ director Debra Nagy (baroque oboe and recorder) for this intimate, one-of-a-kind program of love songs by Pierre Guèdron, Joseph Chabanceau de la Barre, and Michel Lambert, Solos for lute and theorbo by Robert Ballard and Robert de Viseé complete the program.
