Tregoning, III, is a native of Shaker Heights, Ohio, born in 1950.  He graduated from Shaker Heights High School and went on to American University in Washington, D.C., where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History, with minors in both Art History and Music History, graduating in 1972. Upon graduation, Mr. Tregoning joined the staff of the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., as Assistant to the Curator for Prints and Drawings. In 1973 he returned to Cleveland to become Gallery Director of the Bonfoey Company. During his tenure there, he was responsible for the examination, research and preparation of all Fine Art appraisals. He additionally directed and supervised the design, construction and operation of two new art galleries for that firm.

In 1982, he left to form Tregoning Fine Art/Tregoning Fine Art Services, dealing in the acquisition and sale of 17th-21st century paintings, works on paper and sculpture, additionally offering full appraisal services, fine art conservation and archival standard fine art framing. In 1988, Mr. Tregoning helped found the Northeast Ohio Art Dealers Association (NOADA) – the area’s dealer organization dedicated to ethical professionalism in the representation and sale of fine art; he served as the founding Vice-President, and held the same position on the Executive Committee for term year 1999-2000. In April 2007, Tregoning celebrated his 25th year in business by creating Tregoning & Company, and moved the galleries to the Detroit-Shoreway Arts District, just west of downtown Cleveland.  Tregoning was nominated for the 2010 and 2011 Cleveland Arts Prize Martha Joseph Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Arts.
